Those dolls are older than I thought
After they got a good soaking and hair brushing...that stuff was a mess...I discovered that they both have "twist and turn" waists. I think I have 3 of these now and just never payed attention:-)
Mattel stopped using that model body sometime around 1998 according to GOOGLE .The one with bent arms and no hand had 1988 on her body and the other says 1991. Both heads say 1990. I'm still looking for a good picture of them so I can find out which dolls they actually are. The search is fun, but if I don't come up with anything concrete, the hunt is still fun.
